SBRC and Fukuoka city co-hosted the Social Business Forum Asia 2018 Spring (SBFA2018 Spring) at Fukuoka city’s startup support facility, Fukuoka Growth Next, on April 28th. Nearly 140 people participated in the event and the venue was filled with their enthusiasms about Social Business.
The forum was open not only to academics across the world, but also to companies and the public who have interest in Social Business, defined by Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Professor Muhammad Yunus.
In the morning session, Prof. Okada, Executive director of SBRC made the first keynote speech, “Introduction to Yunus Social Business” including the seven principles. Dr. Ashir Ahmed, Associate Professor of Information Science and Electrical Engineering followed him with his keynote speech regarding his research about portable health clinic to eliminate health disparities between wealth and poverty. The last keynote speech was given by Mr. Kazunari Taguchi, CEO, Borderless Japan Corporation. He talked about his company’s ecosystem as the platform for social entrepreneurs sharing its knowledge, experiences, and funds.
Afternoon session included two panel discussions. The panelists for the first discussion were Mr. Masatoshi Nakamura (NTT WEST), Mr. Kazunari Taguchi (Borderless Japan Corporation), and Mr. Isao Soejima (Human Harbor Inc.). They discussed possibility of solving social problems as businesses and importance of cooperation by each different company and position.
The second panel was about Yunus Centers and organization’s Social Business initiatives by directors of Yunus Centers from five countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Ms. Nurfarini Daing (Chief Executive Officer, Youth Trust Foundation, Malaysia) has 14 year experiences on start-ups and facilitated a lot of young entrepreneurs through her training and coaching. Professor Gillian Sullivan Mort(Director, YSBC, La Trobe Business School, Australia) shared their project called ‘Inno Kids’, aimed at primary school children and also a pet business project where they make money to treat homeless peoples’ pets by taking the publics’ pets for walk as a successful example. Dr. Mark Shen (Director, Yunus Center, National Central University, Taiwan) spoke about their projects to facilitate Social Businesses co-working with government. In Taoyuan city (where he works), people are able to receive financial support to organize Social Business contests and support in starting a business. Dr. Faiz Shah (Director, Yunus Center, Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand) shared his observation that not only the number of new businesses to be born, but also their sustainability to be able to a good role model.
The event was concluded with a signing ceremony for an agreement to co-facilitate Social Business Contest Asia-Pacific as their first joint project.
