On December 14th, 2017, Minister of Justice, Yoko Kamikawa, visited Human Harbor Osaka (Fukushima-ku, Osaka) which is a social business company.
Human Harbor Osaka offers a comprehensive social rehabilitation program for people released from prisons by giving them an opportunity to partake in a sustainable industrial recycling business aimed at overcoming the three major obstacles they face in society: accommodation, education, and employment.
After a facility tour, the minister had a talk with the owner, Yoji Kurokawa, and participants in the program.
They all had lunch at the Okonomiyaki restaurant, “Chibo”, which as “work parents” offers job training to some program participants. The minister shook hands and spoke gently with everyone involved.
On December 15th, 2017, the government’s five-year program for the prevention of repeat offenses through cooperation with social businesses was planned to be adopted at the cabinet meeting. The minister’s visit shows that the government has high expectations and views the company as a role model in Japan.
